Why Isn't Your Grown Behind Using a Face Serum Yet?

Hey Lovelies!

By the title of this blog post, you probably think I am ready to give a lecture. I assure I am not – but it might feel like one. I do want to talk to you about face serums and facial oils. I can't say this enough, if you are over 35, you need to be using a face serum. If you've hit that mark and still haven't begun using serums do not worry. It's not too late to enjoy the benefits face serums and facial oils offer.

Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C Are Your Best Friends

I use serums that contain hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C. My 40-year old skin has very fine lines around my mouth and at the corners of my eyes that only I can see apparently (people either won't admit they see them or are blind). If I know they are there, then I need to prevent them from getting deeper and longer for as long as I can. I also have a diminishing forehead crease that has been there since my early 20s. That crease was much longer and deeper than it is now. I attribute my lack of noticeable lines to my use of serums that contain hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.

Hyaluronic acid helps the skin retain moisture. Hydrated skin is plumper, firmer, and has fewer wrinkles. The vitamin C also works on lines, as well as helping to fade skin discoloration. I used to have a lot of acne scars and a large dark area around my chin and mouth. These scars are no more. Unfortunately, my allergic reaction to Keflex has given me two scars on both cheeks that are fading due to my use of serums containing hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. These two ingredients are a must for any serum you plan on purchasing.

Use More Than One Serum on Your Face

I like using two face serums if I cannot afford my holy grail from Jan Marini Skin Research. I will use a hyaluronic acid and vitamin C serum first then apply a serum containing ingredients that firm and moisturize during the day and in the evening one with retinol in it. Use serums containing retinol at night. In fact, use any face product that contains retinol in it at night because the sun degrades the effectiveness of retinol.

Always start with the hyaluronic acid and vitamin C serum first as this helps to retain whatever moisture you have left from washing your face and allows the vitamin C to get to work brightening and clearing your complexion. You want to wait at least a minute before applying your second serum to allow the first to dry and absorb into skin. Your second serum should handle any secondary skin needs you are addressing such as firming, intense wrinkle treatment, etc.

Don't Forget About Facial Oils

Facial oils are the skincare secret most Gen X-ers are missing out on. Facial oils are oils that are applied to the skin and give some of the same benefits that face serums do but with an extra level of moisture that does not clog pores. Yes, you read that correctly. Facial oils do not clog your pores, causing acne and blackheads.

Some people don't like the feel of certain serums but like the results they give. You might be able to find a facial oil that has all the benefits of the serum you like but without the sticky or tacky feeling. If you like using skincare products made from all-natural and organic ingredients, then a facial oil is a better option for you than a face serum. Most facial oils contain natural ingredients from plant oils that have natural anti-aging properties. Plus, if you have oily or combination skin, a facial oil allows you to skip the moisturizer, but you still need to apply sunscreen if leaving the house.

Don't Go Broke, Go with What You Can Afford

Please lovelies, do not miss out on the anti-aging benefits that face serums and facial oils provide. I use both at different times of the year because my skincare needs change with the seasons. The products I mentioned are just recommendations based upon what has given me great results.

You can find face serums and facial oils at the drugstore as well as specialty retail stores to fit your budget. Hey, even though Jan Marini is my holy grail, I can’t always afford it, so I go down the list and use other products that, when combined, give the same results. Sometimes you have to make it work for you.
