Apparel Construction from A to Z: Necklines

I don't think I need to tell you what a neckline is. We deal with necklines every day. Do you know there are various types of necklines beyond the standard, crew, scoop, and v-necklines?

Types of Necklines

I am not going to list all of the different neckline types. I will just list some of the lesser known neckline styles and names.

Boat Neck: A neckline that has a slight curve extending from inner shoulder to inner shoulder. It dips to below the collarbone.
Jewel Neckline: You may know these more as t-shirt or crew necklines. They are circular and scoop close to the neck.
Keyhole Necklines: This neckline is almost like a double neckline. You can initially have any base type of neckline then a secondary neckline that opens near the center bust.
Off-the-Shoulder: Similar to the boat neck, this neckline is wider, almost slipping off the shoulders and falls midway between collarbone and bust cleavage.
Surplice Neckline: A type of v-neckline that is creating by the overlapping or crisscrossing of fabric at the bust line.
Sweetheart Neckline: A low laying neckline that forms a heart-like shape at the bust.
