Hey lovelies! Today's topic is bold lipstick and I took this opportunity to post my review of a new line of bold lipsticks that recently came out. I am excited to share with you beauties my review of Maybelline's newest lip color, Vivid Mattes Liquid Lipstick. These initially were sold online at select drugstores such as Walgreens -- where I purchased mine for $7.99 each. Although, I think they are beginning to hit store shelves soon.
There are currently 10 shades of Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color:
- Nude Thrill -- purchased
- Nude Flush
- Pink Charge
- Electric Pink
- Fuchsia Ecstasy
- Orange Shot -- purchased
- Rebel Red
- Berry Boost
- Vivid Violet -- purchased
- Possessed Plum -- purchased
Most are Demi-Matte. Not a True (Flat) Matte
I have heard and read many who tried these out that they are not matte. Maybelline is to blame for this because they failed to disclose on the product page on Maybelline.com that Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick is a demi-matte lipstick not a true matte or even a velvety matte -- which is what their Creamy Mattes lipsticks are. Demi-matte means there is a soft sheen/shine, semi-matte would be a creamy/velvet matte, and matte would be a flat color that will not reflect any light.
So when the product page states the following you expect a true matte finish or a creamy matte finish:
"Lip color glides on smooth to a matte finish
Infused with pure pigments for high-impact color
Creamy liquid base for a soft, cushiony feel.
Bold, vivid color glides easily onto lips for a velvety matte finish. Formula is comfortable and creamy with a smooth feel upon application. With full color coverage, the result is a rich, intense lip look in a range of colors from Nude Flush to Electric Pink to Vivid Violet. Available in 10 vibrant, matte shades."
They Are Bold on Color
I only purchased the colors that interested me. The colors I purchased were bold, even the nude color. They were rich and pigmented. Surprisingly, each color worked with my skin tone very well. I was nervous about Possessed Plum because it is a very dark eggplant color in the tube. When I applied it the color was bold without being harsh. If this is how every color reacts, I might purchase the rest of them.
Comfort and Wearability
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick is very comfortable to wear. It is not drying nor does it feel slick like many glosses do. When it dries you don't feel it drying and zapping the moisture from your lips.
This is not a "stay put" lipstick. However, you can drink a cup of coffee without it completely wearing off. When I tested the colors on my lips they wiped off easily with a dry cloth. I needed no oil or makeup remover to take this lipstick off.
Tips and Tricks for Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick
The following tips and tricks will help to make your vivid matte liquid lipstick last longer, cover more evenly, and make it more matte.
- Prime lips with foundation.
- Line and fill in with a matching lip liner (if possible) then apply Vivid Matte. Layering this lipstick will help it last a bit longer.
- If color does not apply evenly -- this happens with darker shades like Possessed Plum -- press your lips together to transfer color to help even things out.
- If you want to make the color appear more matte, lightly tap your pinky finger over top and bottom lips to reduce the amount of sheen. I found that Possessed Plum does not even dry to a demi-matte it looks like a gloss. Therefore, you may also want to blot light with a tissue or paper towel to take away the shine.
Overall Opinion of Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick
I like The new Vivid Matte Liquid Lipsticks. They are big on color. However, they definitely are not what I was expecting. They remind of OCC Matte Lip Tar, which also does not dry to a matte finish. I had to work them, tweak them a little to get a good matte finish that lasts. For the price, they are still good. I actually do not mind tweaking my makeup especially if it is an affordable drugstore brand.
Lovelies, should you buy these? It depends on what you want. If you don't mind doing the little tweaks I listed, then buy them. However, if you just want to apply and go, then this might not be the product for you. If you still can't make up your mind, then wait for a Maybelline BOGO or discount sale at your local Walgreens, CVS, or Ulta. At least you will get them at a reduced price.
Note To Maybelline: Maybe work on the formula a bit more to get a better matte finish that lasts longer.
