There are sulfate-free (SLS-free) clarifying and scalp shampoos on the market. They never did a thing for my hair and scalp. I still felt the build-up and my scalp remained itchy. After iFabbo sent me complimentary samples of Keranique's Scalp Stimulating Shampoo and Volumizing Keratin Conditioner, I found my Holy Grail shampoo and a new co-wash.
The Curious Case of My Hair and Scalp
I suffer from seborrheic dermatitis so I use dandruff shampoos when things get bad. SLS-free shampoos designed for scalp care never did much for me. They never met up to my expectations. The standard shampoos designed for scalp care like Head & Shoulders Moisture Care 2-in-1 still did a better job.
My kinky curls desire, a SLS-free shampoo that can:
- Clean my scalp
- Stimulate my scalp
- Reduce buildup on my hair and scalp
How Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo Answered My Kinky Curly Prayers
I used Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo just expecting it to perform the way many SLS-free shampoos perform -- doing a decent job of cleaning my hair and not stripping it of moisture. Lucky for me, my expectations were wrong. Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo cleaned my hair and scalp like dandruff shampoos typically clean them.
I had no buildup residue on my hair or scalp. It actually clarified my hair and scalp. An SLS-free shampoo NEVER got my hair and scalp so clean. The best part is it did not deplete my hair of all its moisture. However, I did need to use a good moisturizing conditioner with it.
Keranique's Volumizing Keratin Conditioner Makes for a Great Co-Wash
The Keranique Volumizing Keratin Conditioner is designed for use with the Scalp Stimulating Shampoo. For my kinky curly hair, it was not moisturizing enough to follow the scalp shampoo. I still wanted to give this conditioner a good try. For my next washing, I decided to use it as a co-wash.
When I co-wash, I like to use volumizing conditioners because they tend to rinse cleaner and leave behind less buildup. The Keranique Volumizing Keratin Conditioner worked as a good co-wash for my kinky curls. I just needed to use a mixture of coconut and argan oils to seal my hair and I was good to go with soft coils.
More Details about the Keranique Products Used
The two products I used are a part of Keranique's Clean & Condition Set. The Scalp Stimulating Shampoo claims to revitalize hair to help improve resilience, volume, thickness, strength, and structure of thinning hair. I already have thick hair so I can't tell if it made my hair thicker or not (not sure if a shampoo can actually do that anyway). The fact that this clarifies the hair removing buildup that would naturally improve resiliency, volume, strength (nothing weighing hair down anymore to cause breakage), and structure.
The Volumizing Keratin Conditioner claims to help thicken fine hair and improve volume without weighing hair down. Like I’ve said before, the conditioner is light so it would not weigh hair down at all. Again, I do not have thin or thinning hair so I cannot attest to claims of making hair thicker.
Being a member of #teamnatural who has thick, kinky curls my needs and use differ from my straight and wavy haired lovelies. For my curly haired lovelies I recommend Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo as your SLS-free clarifying shampoo that helps clean your scalp and follow with a moisturizing conditioner or thick dandruff conditioner. I suggest using the Volumizing Keratin Conditioner as a co-wash. Another feature I forgot to mention about the Clean & Condition Set is that their scent reminds me of Vidal Sassoon shampoos and conditioners from the 80s and 90s. If you are old enough to remember those products, then you know that old salon-formula scent.
I received a sample(s) of the product(s) to keep for consideration in preparing this content.
